Like the AC/DC song says, “getting ripped off, getting juked…” it is easy to get ripped off when playing live music. I recently had a bad experience where I asked for a guarantee and the band that closed out decided to take all the money. I had to eat it because I was half to blame, I should’ve stuck around, no matter how late it was and got my cash. Rather than holding a grudge and not gigging anymore I think it’s good to come up with creative ways to ensure that your going to get paid out for your set.

First off, unless you have a manager, you need to grow some teeth and get ready to fight for yourself. You’ll need to prove to the venue that you did all you could to get your fans to come to the gig. That means getting posters made up, make sure that your show is listed in event calendars and announce on the radio. Make an event on your Facebook page. After sound check, hit the streets with handbills around the area. This is a partnership between you and your venue. Most likely the venue will respond well and treat you very good for your efforts especially if you pack the place.

Second, the deal between you and the venue might be solid but who is collecting the money at the door? It is better to have your own people do it but a lot of venues insist that they do the door because they need to protect themselves from allowing in a minor. One solution is to get two clicker-counters, one for the person collecting the money and the other for a friend in the venue. At the end of the show meet with both and match the number of attendees. Most likely the door person will keep on the up-and -up if he/she knows that there is going to be someone else counting.

The other idea comes from a great friend who is an outstanding drummer. He is playing drums this weekend for 2nd Hand Soldiers at the popular music venue Silvermoon Brewery in Bend, Oregon. They are giving raffle tickets to everyone who pays at the door. At the end of the night a lucky fan will get a prize and they’ll have an exact number of how many people paid. Brilliant!
