Powering Up and Packing it In
I’m looking for a generator that is small and quiet but big enough to power my amp, a few florescent bulbs and pedal board. This will allow me to play my sets in my Off-the-Grid, Gig sessions. I came across the Honda EU2000i, a 2000 Watts and 120v quiet power generator. The specifications say that it’s perfect for a TV, DVD player, satellite, fridge, computer and many more…. hmmm. I wonder if it would handle the load of my amp.
I’m not sure how I would know without testing it out by renting one or borrowing it from a friend.
The other thing I like about this generator is the small size, weighing less that 47 pounds. I think that some of the appeal of the Off-the-Grid, Gig will be how remote the locations are. So I’m going to want to pack the gear into some locations and size will definitely be an issue.
I’m thinking that for the gigs I pack in I’ll ditch my amp and play into a small board to my computer, wearing a headset for monitor. Maybe my son will let me borrow his Burley to pack in the gear up some trails.
The biggest issue is obviously the sound. If I’m going to be recording these sessions I’ve got to somehow insulate the sound. A friend told me that he made a sandwich board with foam, put it up around the generator, facing away from his camp and it quieted down his loud clunker. That might be the solution.
